AboutMe
“Learn from the past, enjoy the present and accept the future.”
The world of journalism is going through significant changes. As a fledgling journalist, it is increasingly important to be competent in multi-media platforms. I take pride in my ability to take high-quality photographs and videos, to create or accompany a story.
I grew up in London and was heavily involved in drama and music at school, joining youth theatres and school orchestras throughout my school life. I learned to play the flute and violin when I was younger and have recently taken up the piano.
I like to collect musical instruments from the countries I visit and have a modest collection of drums and wind instruments, as well as a few guitars and ukuleles from around the Pacific Islands.
I have been lucky enough to see a lot of the world, in all its chaos and beauty, and wish to visit South America in the near future.
I moved to New Zealand just before I turned 20 and started studying philosophy and economics at Otago University. It was here that I got heavily into the debating society, travelling around New Zealand to compete in tournaments.
I was selected in my first year to travel to South Korea to compete in Australs, the Australasian debating championships. I had a great experience meeting students from all over the region and exploring Seoul’s rich and varied culture.
Just before my third year, I was offered
a job as director of the Otago student
paper’s TV segment on a local station.
I had very few resources and next-to-no
experience, but I pushed myself to
produce a five-minute segment each
week, with the help of my director of
photography.
It was during this time that I decided to
leave university and go to study journalism.
I utilized the visual skills I picked up whilst
working for the student paper and produced
news videos for the Waikato Independent.
I am currently working for Fairfax at the
Waikato Times and I am continuing to learn
the tricks of the media trade.
I wish to keep developing my visual and
investigative skills to become one of the best
multi-media journalists in the country.
