Personal statement

 

I am an aspiring journalist, film-maker and photographer with a genuine interest in people.  I am currently working for the Waikato Times in Hamilton and hope to utilise my audio-visual skills to continue telling New Zealand's stories.

What I can do well

 

  • I can write original articles (both news and features) to length and deadline.

  • I can use DSLR cameras to direct, shoot, edit and produce quality film packages, to length and deadline.

  • I can use DSLR cameras to take a wide range of photographs.

  • I can use a wide range of software (including CQ5, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Audacity and Microsoft Office) and learn to navigate new programs quickly.

  • I can understand and interpret statistics due to my economics background and use data to produce fresh stories.

  • I can apply for OIA requests and use the information to build a story.

  • I can deal with councils and emergency services.

  • I can research topics to find the appropriate people to talk to for a story.

  • I can understand complex issues as I studied philosophy and economics at a university level.

  • I have great communication skills due to working in retail and hospitality for eight years.

  • I can write notes using Teeline at 80 words per minute.

  • I am an effective public speaker after studying speech and drama and participating in debating tournaments.

  • I am well-travelled and able to adapt to new situations and environments quickly.

  • I can think quickly and have a high problem solving ability.

  • I can utilize social media to increase site traffic.

  • Won Best Speaker at Otago University Debating Society’s annual Bluff Cup.

  • Won Otago University Debating Society’s annual Bluff Cup final.

  • Awarded runner-up at the South Island’s debating championship, Claytons.

  • Travelled to South Korea to compete in Australasia’s debating championship, Australs.

  • Chosen as Team Leader for a Children’s Poverty Workshop, representing Aiesec Otago.

  • Elected onto the executive board for Aiesec Otago.

  • Elected onto Otago University’s Debating Society Executive.

  • Travelled to Wellington to debate at the Easters and Australs championships.

  • Obtained five English Speaking Board awards, at Distinction Level.
