A young family had a lucky escape when a car smashed into their house early on Saturday morning.

The driver and occupant of the car avoided serious injury and made a run for it after slamming into the Breckons Ave home.

At about 6.45am Mihinoa Moeke was making her baby's bottle when she heard a loud crash.

"I heard it go boom. So I looked out the window and there was a car underneath my balcony.

"I went to see if my kids were alright and I told my partner there was a car underneath our house, so he came running out, half dressed."

Moeke's partner saw someone jump out the car and go running through the neighbouring park, but neighbours have reported seeing two people flee the vehicle.

The car appears to have driven through the boundary fence before crashing into the house.

"It's taken out the balcony, took out the fence line, took out some of our piping. The car was totalled. The wood from the balcony had gone straight through the windscreen. They're just lucky they never hit the brick, that they never actually died in the car out there."

Moeke, her partner and their three children live in the house, and said they had seen the car pulling in and out of driveways along the road on Friday.

"It was a silver Mazda. A few of the neighbours know the car. They reckon the people who own the car, we see them around all the time."

And for the driver of the vehicle, Moeke is just pleased he's still alive.

"Drivers just be aware. Go home for a sleep or something. They could have come and knocked at the door if they wanted a cup of tea."

Senior Sergeant Damion Rangitotia said the car had narrowly missed the house.

"It went into the balcony of the house and when police arrived the occupant or occupants - we're unsure of how many people were in the car - weren't there."

"There's conflicting information ... so we're carrying out some enquiries at the moment to find out who that may have been."

The balcony is now unsafe to use after a car crashed into it Saturday morning.
