New Zealand Post plans to close its Frankton and Hamilton East sites but hopes local businesses can take over and run postal and banking services of its behalf.
New Zealand Post general manager for retail distribution, Tracey Berry, said the company is committed to offering full services in both suburbs, including Kiwibank ATMs and post boxes.
"The Waikato community will continue to have a physical place to access our full range of services in both Frankton and Hamilton East, these services will just be located within other local businesses," Berry said.
In 2013, the New Zealand Post Group announced that it would be making changes to its store network, including forming more relationships with local businesses.
At the moment both the PostShop at 188 Commerce Street in Frankton and the PostShop at 1 B Clyde Street Hamilton East offer full postal and Kiwibank services.
New Zealand Post is working with a business broker to find local businesses that can host the same services from these locations, or within their own businesses.
"We already work with local businesses in over 130 communities around the country and we are confident that this approach will work well in the Waikato.
"Our PostShops will continue to operate as usual while we look for businesses to team up with in these areas. We will keep the community up to date with our progress," Berry said.
"We are also working closely with our people in our PostShops as we explore options. We are committed to supporting our people through the transition."
New Zealand Post says businesses interested could email nicks@linkbusiness.co.nz.
